The most expensive knife isn’t necessarily the best. If you don’t keep your knives up in good condition, they won’t be easy to cook with, no matter how costly they were. It’s vital to have the right knives and be able to make sure they’re in good shape, if you want to have an efficient kitchen and avoid accidents.
Every cook should have a good chef’s knife. A chef’s knife has a large handle, and blade that’s wide at the base but tapers to a point. These can be used for almost all your kitchen tasks, and it’s not really worth it to get a full knife set. Instead, invest in a single good chef’s knife that will hold an edge, and keep it good and sharp.
Remember that not every chef’s knife is the same. These blades come in many different sizes, and are measured by the length of the blade. Don’t get one that’s too small - the smallest knife you should buy for all purpose use is around eight inches long, not including the handle. Small knives may seem safer or easier to use, but that’s not always true. Large knives can be used to cut small things, but the reverse doesn’t work.
There’s a bewildering variety out there, as even the above eight inch chef’s knife can be found in versions costing between fifteen dollars and more than a hundred fifty. People on a budget should avoid the cheapest knives and settle on one that’s about twenty-five dollars. Look for a significant overhang below the handle to help you keep your knife sharp.
You might have heard that a costly knife will hold it’s edge longer. That’s not really true. Good steel does keep an edge better than the cheapest metal, but cutting any sturdy root vegetable will cause the edge to go out of true. It doesn’t matter if you’re using a mediocre knife or one that’s top of the line. To help fix this, use a steel to straighten the edge on a daily basis. Steels are the long sticks you’ve probably seen with knife sets, and are traditionally made from steel. However, many are not ceramic or diamond. Using a steel is just a matter of swiping it down the side of the knife at a twenty degree angle, but this takes some experience. For those who aren’t comfortable with this process, there are also a few easier options.
You can get knife and tool sharpeners that have their own built in angle, eliminating guesswork. With them, you can straighten a knife edge without needing skill. Just hold the knife with the edge up, tip hanging off the counter’s edge. Swipe the sharpener over the edge a few times, and you’ll get a much sharper blade. However, this kind of sharpener can reduce the life of your knife, taking metal off the edge. Still, a knife that’s sharp and lasts a few years is better than a dull one for a lifetime.
No matter how you sharpen your knives, be sure to wash and dry them both before and after sharpening. Once you get used to having a sharp knife, you’ll know right away when yours is losing its edge. Suddenly, cutting becomes a lot more difficult. One easy test is sliding your knife along a peach or tomato, exerting no pressure. If the knife is sharp, it’ll pierce the skin right away.
Always treat your knife carefully, too. Don’t use a granite or glass cutting board, because they’ll hurt the edge. Instead, a plastic or wood cutting surface is preferred. Also, wash and dry the knife immediately after use to prevent a sink full of dishes from taking the edge off.

Expensive knives might not be the ones that are the best in the kitchen. That’s because any knife that’s not maintained in good condition will be hard to use, no matter what the price. Keeping the right knives and making sure you take care of them is a vital part of keeping things running well in your workspace.

If the knife is sharp, it’ll split the skin.
Knives should always be treated with care. Don’t use glass, granite, or other hard cutting boards. Instead, try wood or plastic. You should also keep the edge from getting damaged by washing and drying with right away after use. This keeps it from being damaged by other dishes and tools.

It’s vital to have the right knives and be able to make sure they’re in good shape, if you want to have an efficient kitchen and avoid accidents.
Every cook should be sure to have a decent chef’s knife. This is the familiar large handled knife with a wide base and pointed tip, and it’s the knife you’ll use for most of your cutting tasks. You might have been told that expensive knives hold their edges longer, but this isn’t really the case. As a means of contraception, tubal ligation surgery has been used on millions of women in just the U.S. itself over the years. When researching this method, one can’t help but come upon stories about Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome. Women who suffer from this after effect of the surgery relate awful examples of the symptoms that they suffer. A basic search on the web on the topic will lead you to horrible story after horrible story.
A long list of thirty-five possible symptoms can be found when looking into the symptoms of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome, or ptls for short, on different websites. However, when you read the personal stories of the women suffering from this after effect, you will most often read of longer bouts of and stronger PMS symptoms, bad mood swings, and very altered periods usually with severe bleeding so bad they cannot even leave home. Also suffered are migraines, no sex drive, weight gain and severe cramping.
As if the above wasn’t enough for these ladies to suffer through, they have to suffer further ignominy from their doctors and medical staff. Most doctors do not believe ptls even exist. One such doctor calls it a “medical myth” in an interview. So these women suffering these symptoms will be met with derision and suggestions of seek counseling and use anti-depressants. At the very best, they will be told to just learn to live with it.
One possible treatment these poor women will receive is to be put back onto birth control pills. Considering they went through the tubal ligation surgery instead of using birth control pills, they don’t seem to be coming out ahead. But there are some doctors, and given how many times this seems to be the treatment given most doctors, are of the opinion that what these women are suffering is due to going off birth control pills or to age. Sometimes the women are told they will just need to get a total hysterectomy. Has anyone wondered what that implies?
This is why our quoted medical myth doctor suggests that women about to undergo a tubal ligation surgery should go off birth control pills several months before the procedure. I’m guessing that the supposed age-related factors are something you just have to live with. However, I’m not sure these suggestions will do much to help those women who were pregnant and had their tubes tied upon having their child. Obviously no birth control pills were being used prior to the surgery. Nor do the “age related factors” seem to have any application to those women still in their 20’s and experiencing these problems.
One thing that could be done is a preventive measure, namely more information within the surgical consent form and better counseling prior to the surgery. Many women complained they had no idea and were never told of the possible outcome of ptls after the surgery. The FDA website itself only gives infection, ectopic pregnancy, hemorrhage and problems related to using general anesthesia as possible “rare” complications. With the exception of the ectopic pregnancy, these are the normal “rare” complications for any surgery using general anesthesia. It probably wouldn’t stop most women but would give them reason to do some research into the subject and make an informed decision.
While better information prior to the surgery would be good, it doesn’t help those who have already done it. For these women, there are the actions mentioned above which can be done such as going onto birth control pills, having a hysterectomy or just learning to live with it no matter how much it may impair their lives. One more option that some women don’t even know is available is to have a tubal ligation reversal surgery done. In the stories shared by women on the Internet, this latter surgery has brought much relief.
Going to the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal forum will lead you to threads that address the issue of ptls. Women come asking if a tubal ligation reversal will really help them. Those who respond answer in the affirmative talking about all their previous symptoms and how they now have relief or improvement. An added side benefit is the possibility of now having another child though some say they don’t even care about that since the relief from post tubal ligation syndrome is so great.

Among the methods of stopping conception available to women is the method of having their tubes tied. Along with the normal surgical risks a woman undergoing this procedure has to be aware of, there is the addition of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome. Looking around the Internet will provide you with story after story of the painful and embarrassing experiences of the women who suffer it.
For those women who suffer from Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome, also called PTLS, there is a long list of possible symptoms they can have. Upon researching this topic, one can find a popular list (seen on several websites) of 35 possible symptoms. Within the personal stories, most women seem to suffer from terrible mood swings, longer and/or heavier bleeding during periods, weight gain or inability to lose weight, awful PMS, problems sleeping, low to no sex drive, migraines and very severe, even crippling, abdominal pain. Cramps is too wimpy a word for what these women report.
These symptoms are bad enough for the women and their families suffering through them. But this is not all they face. In trying to find out what is wrong with them, they endure many tests from doctors leading to various different diagnoses even for the same woman from the different specialist she may visit. When none of their “fixes” bring any relief, the women have to face being told either to learn to live with it or be prescribed antidepressants as the symptoms are all in their heads. We even have one doctor calling ptls a “medical myth” on MedicineNet so, of course, these women are not actually suffering from anything “real”.
The other treatment options these women suffering ptls will most often hear appears to be going on birth control pills or to have a hysterectomy. Some doctors think that the reason for the problems is that after the tubal ligation the women are no longer taking birth control pills or that they have just gotten older. So the best way to fix it is put them back onto birth control pills or just get a hysterectomy.
One doctor is quoted as saying that women should be removed from birth control pills well in advance of the tubal ligation surgery in order to allow their bodies to return to norm. The thinking is that this would let the ladies know what their condition, related to PMS and menses, prior to having the surgery. Who knows what the answer is for the “age related” problems? Learn to live with it? But these don’t address the ladies who have the tubal done at the birth of the last child they wanted. And the age related cause does not address the young women in their 20’s or, in my opinion, the ones in their early 30’s who are having problems with ptls either.
Informing women about to undergo the tube tying surgery would be one thing that should be done. Most have no idea that ptls is even a possible complication to the surgery. Mostly they are told that there is a chance for an infection, hemorrhage or a problem related to the use of general anesthesia as you would have in any surgery. What is added for this particular surgery is the additional complication of an ectopic pregnancy. This information is from the FDA’s own website. The “Coalition for Post-Tubal Women” is trying to accomplish a change in the consent form. Better counseling about this possibility would be good as well but since many, dare I say most, doctors believe this to be a mythical syndrome, who knows if it will ever happen. At least let them know so they can do their own research and make their own decisions if this is something they want to risk.
Coal-fired electricity stations send dioxins into the air as the smoke is dispersed. Also, dioxins come from all types of factory wastes, commercial incineration, traffic pollution, industrial emissions, fires, and many other chemical and industrial processes. Tests show dioxins to be the most potent carcinogen known to man.
Many studies show that dioxins cause serious illness in humans, including a variety of cancers, kidney disease, birth defects, poor health and premature death.
Unfortunately, dioxins are just about everywhere in nature because they get carried by weather patterns, rain, ocean currents, and wind to all parts of the globe. Dioxins settle on pastures, and on plants and grains that form part of the food chain for animals and humans.
Although there is little we can do to escape dioxins altogether, we can minimize the amount that goes into our body by avoiding certain foods. Dioxins are found in equal measure in both organic and non-organic food. Dioxins do not come from pesticides or fertilizers - they come from the environment at large and even from the water supply.
On the whole, our bodies can deal with a low level of dioxins. Some will get excreted instead of being absorbed into the body to cause illness. To some extent we can reduce the level of dioxins we absorb by avoiding foods high in dioxins.
Which food is highest in dioxins? Dairy milk has a higher amount of dioxins than any other food or drink, weight for weight. All mammals produce milk for breastfeeding to their young (including humans). Dioxins consumed by the mother get concentrated in her breast milk. This occurs, because all nutrients (including dioxins) get concentrated in breast milk as a way of providing rich nourishment to the new born.
This means human babies get concentrated dioxins from their mother’s milk. Mercifully, a baby stops breastfeeding after a few months so the level of dioxins received by the baby drops off. Also, human milk has a lower concentration of dioxins compared to dairy milk.
But it’s a different story for a milk consumer. Over time, the daily consumption of dairy milk produces a dangerous build up of dioxins in the body, causing serious disease, below-par health and premature death.
There is plenty of research (too much to list here) showing that dairy milk has the highest concentration of dioxins compared to just about any other food product.
‘Dioxins penetrate the environment via air, water and soil and are then incorporated in food chains. The major source of human exposure to dioxins (90%) is consumption of .dairy products.’ (Professor Rocz Panstw, Zakl Hig, 1999, 50:3).
‘The primary source of dioxins is food, especially .dairy products.’ (Chemosphere, 1998 Oct, 37:9).
‘The lipophilic nature of dioxins.may result in relatively high concentrations of dioxin contamination in dairy products.’ (Journal of Animal Science, 1998 Jan, 76:1).
‘Cows’ milk is ideal for assessing levels because these compounds adhere to fat and are transferred to and eliminated in the milk of the lactating animal.’ (Linda Fitzpatrick, Cork Harbour Alliance for a Safe Environment, 2005).
All kinds of dairy milk contain dioxins in varying degrees, including organic milk. Unfortunately over eighty percent of organic milk sold in the world is UHT milk (also known as Long Life milk). In the Americas and most of Europe virtually all organic milk is UHT milk.
You get far more dioxins with UHT milk than you do with regular pasteurized milk because more dioxins gets digested instead of being flushed out of the body. This occurs because the micronized fat globules in UHT milk are much smaller. As a result, significantly more dioxins from organic UHT milk get into the bloodstream. See below to find out more.

Women who suffer from this after effect of the surgery relate awful examples of the symptoms that they suffer. A basic search on the web on the topic will lead you to horrible story after horrible story.
Want to know what the symptoms of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome, or ptls, are? Well, a search will bring up a list of about 35 possibilities. Some say these are problems you can have with any type of surgery and that may well be true of some of them. However, the ones most commonly found in the stories of the sufferers are very heavy bleeding and/or longer periods, stronger pms symptoms, migraines, weight gain or inability to lose weight, terrible cramping to the point of being bed ridden for some and little to no libido. Some women even complain of thinning hair and terrible mood swings that have caused relationship problems.
Many women are told they need to go on birth control pills or even undergo another surgery to “correct” whatever is wrong up to and including a hysterectomy. If you need to be on birth control pills, what good did it do to have a tubal ligation in the first place? However, you will find in the medical literature that many doctors believe the problems found after the surgery are actually caused by the women going off birth control pills and other factors related to age.
Our doctor quoted above, the “medical myth”, says women should be removed from birth control pills several months in advance of the actual tubal ligation surgery. This will given them a chance to see what their periods and pms are really like without the hormones of the birth control pills. If the problems stem from age, I suppose you are just going to have “to learn to live with it.” But this advice does not seem to be pertinent to the women who were pregnant and get the tubal done at delivery or shortly thereafter. Nor does the age cause seem to relate to women who are in their 20’s.
One thing that could be done is a preventive measure, namely more information within the surgical consent form and better counseling prior to the surgery. Many women complained they had no idea and were never told of the possible outcome of ptls after the surgery. With the exception of the ectopic pregnancy, these are the normal “rare” complications for any surgery using general anesthesia. It probably wouldn’t stop most women but would give them reason to do some research into the subject and make an informed decision.
Even if a better consent form and counseling were available, it still won’t help those who have had the surgery and are now suffering the effects of post tubal ligation syndrome. You could try the options talked about above like birth control pills or a hysterectomy. Or you could try a tubal ligation reversal surgery. In a study conducted by Dr. Berger of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center on the women who have come to him and complained of having the symptoms of ptls, 90% saw a reduction in their symptoms. You can read the stories yourself at http://forums.tubal-reversal.net/ where the ladies are happy to help as well as nurses who provide information.
A further review of the site for Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal reveals a forum where many threads can be found addressing the issues of PTLS. It seems women ask if tubal reversal is the best way to take care of the symptoms. In every case I read, other women answer in the affirmative describing how much improved their lives are in all respects, including the possibility of having another child. Walking into a car dealership knowing that your credit is less than great is a bit intimidating. Going through all of the motions with the salesman, picking out a car, just to find out in the end that they can’t finance you because of your credit is very dismaying and embarassing. However, having less than perfect is not a car loan death sentence. There are ways to get car loans for bad credit.
You’re not the only one with bad credit who needs a car loan. There are many lenders who specialize in car loans for bad credit situations. The interest rates on these loans will not be as attractive as those with great credit, but they will allow you to purchase the new car you want. There are ways to get these types of loans - here are a few tips that will help you find them.
The first step you want to take before looking for your loan is to get a copy of your credit report, and make sure there is nothing inaccurate or misleading. If you find anything on there that you disagree with, or feel that could be removed, you have nothing to lose by writing to the credit bureaus to get them corrected. This step can wind up potentially making a large difference in your situation.
Knowing about your credit is helpful - before you visit the car dealer. You don’t want to suddenly be shocked when you are trying to buy a car, finding out that your credit is bad. So, make sure that you know your credit score before you go car shopping so you have the upper hand. This way you’ll be able to look for the best options available to you, in spite of your credit.
If you are able, bypass the car dealer and try to work with the finance company directly when seeking car loans for bad credit. Dealers get a cut of the deals they get financed, so you can potentially pay more when working with a dealership.
If you are willing and able, go to a bank or even a financing company, even though you have less than perfect credit. It’s worth an effrort, as the advantages are great - you will have your financing already in place before stepping foot on the dealership’s lot.
Don’t forget to do a little shopping around. Don’t necessarily go with the first lender who is willing to give you some money for your car purchase. There are lots of bad credit auto lenders out there, so your first option is not always your best one. With a bit of looking around, you should be able to find a decent enough auto loan for bad credit.
So, as you can see, even if you do have bad credit, there are ways that you can finance the car you want and need. Car loans for bad credit are available, and with a little work and research on your part, you’ll be able to find a deal that is cost effective for you.
